Supporting childhood milestones through adaptive equipment

One of the most rewarding moments as a parent or grandparent is seeing a child ride a bike for the very first time. But for families who care for a child with a disability, there is often the fear they will not see this milestone.

This was the sentiment of parents Joel and Diane who care for their 17-year-old child, Zoey, who is non-speaking and unable to walk independently, relying on a walker, stroller or crawling when at home.

Thankfully, there are adaptive bikes with stability options, specialized seating, harnesses, and other features to support safety, independence and rehabilitation. Adapted bikes are among the most requested equipment funded by the Children’s Rehabilitation Foundation, with more than 100 requests each year, from therapists and other agencies.

Generous donors are helping children get adapted bikes tailored to their unique abilities and needs. These bikes offer more than mobility; they provide freedom, confidence, inclusion, and the chance to participate alongside friends and family.

“It gives her the opportunity to go out and be a kid. Summers are very different for Zoey with a bike,” says Joel.

Right now, gifts are needed to help fund 25 bikes. These will support children eager to have their first ride.

Through the Foundation’s adaptive bike loan program, bikes are returned when youth outgrow them, refurbished, and then fitted to another child’s needs. This means your donation can help multiple children experience the joy and independence that comes with riding a bike.

Today you can help children, like Zoey, gain access to life-changing equipment and create opportunities for many others on our waitlist.

Please give at 25bikes.com to help kids with disabilities who are waiting for an adapted bike.

With gratitude.
