For children who are non-verbal or have complex communication needs, expressing a simple thought, sharing a feeling, or telling a parent they are in pain can be an enormous challenge.
Without the right support, many children struggle to communicate their needs, connect with family members, and fully participate in everyday life.
Innovation and technology can change that.
Through specialized communication tools, children can express their thoughts, emotions, choices, and ideas in ways that work for them. Whether using eye-gaze technology, speech-generating devices, or customized communication systems, these tools help children connect with their parents, siblings, teachers, and friends. They provide opportunities for children to participate more fully in conversations, build relationships, and share their unique personalities with the world.
These solutions are highly specialized and often costly because they must be tailored to each child’s individual abilities and needs. At the Rehabilitation Centre for Children, a unique team of electrical engineers works directly alongside occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists to design, adapt, and support communication technology for each child. Together, they ensure that every communication system is customized to help that child communicate as effectively and independently as possible.
This collaborative approach recognizes that no two children communicate in the same way. By combining clinical expertise with specialized technology, the team helps children discover reliable ways to express themselves and engage more meaningfully with the people around them.
For families, the impact can be life changing. A child who was previously unable to tell a parent what they wanted, how they felt, or what they were thinking can begin to share their voice. These moments strengthen family connections, foster independence, and help children participate more fully in daily life.
Donors make this possible.
By supporting Children’s Rehabilitation Foundation, you help provide access to specialized communication technology and the expert support required to customize it for each child. Your generosity helps children who are non-verbal find new ways to communicate, connect with their families, and share their thoughts, feelings, and needs through technology.
Together, we can help every child be heard. Please #ChooseChildrensRehabilitation for your next gift at childrensrehabilitation.ca.
