Senior’s Music Festival fills October with sensational sound

Back for the third year is the Senior’s Music Festival, the brain child of three dedicated men: Howard Mar, George Chapman, was a choir singer; and Gil Forrest, who played the trumpet. Howard Mar will take up the trumpet on the evening of the 25th to play along with the Murray Riddell Big Band, featuring the music of artists such as Harry James Tommy Dorsey and Artie Shaw. Howard will play again on October 30 at the Festival Grand Finale.

The trio started the festival as a celebration of all the brilliant things musicians their age have done in their lives and to show that they can still produce. They play along with younger people in the traditional way of making music.

The festival runs October 14 to 30th and this year will include nine separate acts each evening. There are a total of 25 different acts featuring hundreds of performers.

Featured this year will be The RCAF Command Brass Quartet, the HMCS Chippewa Band, Ray St. Germain, and the Winnipeg Male Chorus, and Ron Paley, to name just few. In total, there are 25 groups and hundreds of performers playing music from three eras: 1900 to 1930; 1945 to 2015, and some pretty avante garde offerings envisioned as from 2030 to 2100.

All concerts start at 7 p.m. at Lutheran Church of the Cross, 560 Arlington Street, north of Ellice Ave. The tickets are just $12 for each performance and are available from the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra Box Office at 204-949-3999; from McNally Robinson and at the door on the evening of the performance.

It’s a lot of fun and the hall is usually full, so come early to get the best seat.
