On Dec. 6, at the Winnipeg Convention Centre, the rejuvenated Canadian Club will hold its first luncheon after a two-year hiatus. It will feature Canada’s ambassador to the United States, the Hon. Gary Doer, at the Winnipeg Convention Centre. It looks to be a sell-out event.
The re-start owes its impetus to a few dedicated volunteers, chief among them, James Brennan, who did all the leg work to get things going again. Working in the background have been many of the former members including Muriel Smith and Ron Kirbyson. Ron is a former president of the club.
Over the past months, we have met several times to determine future direction. The first step was to convince Gary Doer to help with the re-launch. Thanks to the diligent efforts of Muriel Smith, who worked hard to convince her former colleague to be our first speaker, the club was able to secure Gary Doer for the inaugural event. Lloyd Axworthy also threw in a good word on our behalf.
A first organizational meeting was held Oct. 7, 2013 with a dozen eager volunteers who agreed to accept places on an interim board. Plans are underway to create a new set of by-laws to govern the club going forward. For the time being, the club will maintain an office on the premises of Pegasus Publications Inc. at 3081 Ness Avenue. It is hoped that once the luncheon is over, there will be enough resources to set up a more permanent arrangement at the United Way.
Initially, luncheons are planned to take place every two months.
Tickets to this event will be $50 for members and $65 for others. To become a member ($45 for the year) in the Canadian Club of Winnipeg, e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org, call 204-799-9086 or go online to www.canadianclubofwinnipeg.ca. Credit and debit cards accepted.
